The problem

Corten steel is frequently used in architecture and is appreciated for its raw rusted appearance. This surface rust, which protects the steel against corrosion, can sometimes change its appearance and no longer meet the owner's aesthetic criteria. 

RD Coatings offers a simple, quick-to-apply and highly durable solution for renovating Corten steel elements.

The solution

RD Coatings offers two systems, depending on the condition of the Corten steel and the desired finish.

These paint systems can be applied quickly in just two coats!

Being water-based, the products contain very little VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and are non-flammable. Virtually odorless, they are easy and fast to apply, causing little inconvenience!

Repainting (color) steel

If the aesthetics of Corten steel are no longer optimal, or if you're simply looking for a more radical change in aesthetics, RD Coatings oofers to apply the RD-Elastometal/RD-Monoguard system, one coat of each product. This high-performance system with exceptional anti-rust properties will totally change the appearance of the construction with the color of your choice. 

RD-Elastometal combines very high anti-corrosive properties, elasticity, excellent adhesion to different types of substrate and UV resistance.

RD-Monoguard protects steel against corrosion in the harshest environments and is UV-resistant. Its film forms a taut, neat enamel-like finish.

This combination has been tested by an accreditate laboratory according to ISO 12944 and protects steel in C5 High environments!

Preserving the rusted appearance of Corten steel

When it is requested to preserve the original appearance of Corten steel, RD Coatings offers a unique two-coat system based on RD-Monoguard Clear, applied directly to the steel surface.

RD-Monoguard Clear is a fast-drying transparent varnish with exceptional anti-rust properties, available in Matte, Satin or Gloss finishes. 

Option/good to know - Graffiti risk

If there is a risk of graffiti, the paint system can be overcoated with one or two coats of RD-Hydrograff HP Clear (Transparent).

RD-Hydrograff HP Clear is a two-component, water-based polyurethane paint offering very high chemical and mechanical resistance. Its application makes it easier to clean off any graffiti. It is available in Matte, Satin and High Gloss finishes.

/!\ Tip : In the case of varnish, the second coat of RD-Monoguard Clear can be directly replaced by the anti-graffiti finish RD-Hydrograff HP Clear !

Application conditions and work preparation:

Environmental conditions (general requirements)

• Minimum air and substrate temperatures: 10°C / 50°F for 24 hours at start of application.

• Maximum surface temperature: 55°C / 130°F.

• Maximum relative humidity: 85%.

• Surface temperature must be at least 3°C / 5°F above dew point. 

/!\ Notes

• There must be no condensation on the surface during application and drying. Caution when working at the beginning or end of the season!

• Overnight drying between coats is generally recommended. However, drying rates for water-based coatings depend on temperature, humidity and wind.

• From 15°C / 59°F, working conditions are comfortable and enable higher productivity.

• If the project is located in a very hot area with very intense sunshine during the day, avoid applying the system when the sun is most intense on the surface, and prefer to work early in the morning, late in the afternoon or in the shade.

Surface preparation

The surface must always be clean, dry, free of grease and contaminants. Loose rust or paint must be removed.

Accepted methods and standards :

• High-pressure cleaning to SSPC SP12 WJ4.

• In the event of rust formation other than on Corten steel, manual or mechanical derusting ST2 - ISO 8501-1 / SSPC SP2 or SP3.

• Spray on RD-Eco PowerClean. Leave for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with a high-pressure cleaner fitted with a 0° angle rotating nozzle, at minimum 180 bar / 2600 psi pressure.

Brush
Airless device: nozzle opening: 0.015 - 0.023 in - minimum pressure 180 bar / 2600 psi.

RD-Monoguard

Brush, roller or airless.
Airless: nozzle opening 010 to 012 - pressure 70 to 150 bar / 1000 to 2200 psi.
Airless application is recommended to reach recommended thicknesses more easily. 

RD-Monoguard Clear

Brush, roller or spray gun.
Airless gun: nozzle opening 1.4 mm - pressure 4 to 6 bar (60 to 90 psi)
Airless: nozzle opening 007 to 009 - pressure +/- 70 bar (+/- 1000 psi)

RD-Hydrograff HP Clear

Brush and roller. Pneumatic: nozzle opening 1.4 mm - pressure 4 to 6 bar (60 to 90 psi)
Airless: nozzle opening 007 to 009 - pressure +/- 70 bar (+/- 1000 psi)

Tool cleaning

Clean water only.

Products application

RD-Eco Powerclean

Dilute between 5 and 20% in water, depending on the degree of soiling. Spray on and leave for 15 minutes. Then rinse with a high-pressure cleaner and allow to dry.

RD-Elastometal

Ready-to-use product. Stir mechanically a few minutes before application. Do not dilute.

Just before application, add component B to component A, slowly, mixing mechanically.

After mixing, allow to stand for 5-10 minutes, until air bubbles disappear.
